Cape Standard

1936 - 1947

The Coloured Standard was Coloured people's newspaper launched in May of 1936 in Cape Town by Prudential (an Indian firm).  With writers like Peter Abrahams, G.C Gibbs and George Manuel covering a variety of content for the newspaper, politically, the Cape Standard was viewed as sympathetic in its coverage to all anti-apartheid movements (Switzer 1979: 16). It was also major source of black protest poetry, essays and short stories. Its objective was to harness ambition and race consciousness for the Coloured youth reflecting its opinion and the fight for equality and opportunities.
