Izwi Labantu

1897 - 1909

Founded in East London by Walter Benson Rubusana, Nathaniel Mhala, R. R Mantsayi, Thomas Mqanda, George Tyamzashe etc. with the financial support of Cecil John Rhodes. Izwi Labantu was a reactionary newspaper established to opposed to Jabavu's support of the Afrikaner Bond in the election of 1898 in the Cape Colony. The paper supported 'English speaking Progressive Party' and also broke the monopoly Imvo Zabantu enjoyed and enhanced the Black Press role. (Switzer 1979: 47).
